jews harp

old instrument, known in many countries

jews harp

Jew's harp, humming iron, mouth harp, classic folk instrument, still popular today in the Alpine region, but also known in many other cultures, e.g. in Asia or Russia.

Many names exist for this small instrument.

A metal spoon is made to vibrate. If you hold the instrument in front of your mouth between your lips, the tones become loud because the mouth becomes the resonance body of the instrument.

The jew's harp has a very unique sound that has something primeval about it. The jew's harp is also a shamanic instrument.

The roots of this instrument can be traced back to pre-Christian times. Their origins are in Asia, Mongolia and Siberia. The South Asian jaw harps are built slightly differently than the European ones. They are made from a piece of sheet brass. The Danmoi from Vietnam has become known in this way.
In Europe, the jew harp is a popular folk instrument in the Alpine region, but also in Sicily and the Balkans.

noseflute

An extraordinary flute, traditional from Indonesia.
You don't blow this flute with the mouth but with the nose.
Even you play the notes not with fingers, but by changing the opening of the mouth like at the jew-harp.

These nose-flutes are made from pine-wood and finished with linseed.

How to play:
You keep the nose-flute in front of your face, that the round hole is under your nose and the half-moon hole in front of your mouth.
The nose blows in to the hole and the mouth is opened on the half-moon hole.
With changing of the opening of the mouth you can play different notes.

Xiao

The Japanese shakuhachi is best known as a notch flute from Asia.

This Chinese variant is built more slender and has a narrow notch like the South American Quena flute. This narrow notch is a little easier to blow than the wide edge of the Shakuhachi.

The flute has 5 finger holes and one thumb hole. You can play about 2 octaves with it, the fingering is very similar to the 6-hole flute, the thumb hole is the 6th hole. Since the holes are very far apart, the fingers are set a little differently than you are used to with the smaller 6-hole flutes.

The flute is made of bamboo, the surface is darkly colored and the head is decorated with a dragon motif. A traditional Chinese lucky knot can be attached to the foot.
