The shakuhachi is used in Japanese zen-buddhism as a meditational instrument. It is a pentatonic notched flute made from bamboo. The five holes represent the five elements of zen-buddhism: fire, earth, air, water and metal.
The method of playing the shakuhachi is the same as playing the flute except that the instrument is held vertically. This produces a sound governed by overtones.

An other kind of Shakuhachi cames from China and is called Xiao. Also made from bamboo but the tuning is diatonic and the mouthpiece is more narrow and closed..
