Shakuhachi

The shakuhachi is used in Japanese zen-buddhism as a meditational instrument. It is a pentatonic notched flute made from bamboo. The five holes represent the five elements of zen-buddhism: fire, earth, air, water and metal.
The method of playing the shakuhachi is the same as playing the flute except that the instrument is held vertically. This produces a sound governed by overtones.

Another version of the shakuhachi comes from China and is called
Xiao. Made likewise out of bamboo, it is diatonic instead of pentatonic and has a narrower mouthpiece, making it easier to hold a tone.
